A Necklace to Represent My "H"

Did you catch that? The little H on the back?

Earlier this Spring, we were working with a client who loves half bezels. It’s not a style I’ve done very often, but the uniqueness of it started stirring some creative juices in my brain. We had a pretty good idea of what we were going to name our son back in the beginning of the year, well before his due date in early Summer, but just to be sure, we waited until we met him to share.

However, in the last month of my pregnancy, I was feeling so certain that he was going to be our little H that I started daydreaming about the piece of jewelry I’d make myself to mark this milestone. The half-bezel design kept creeping in the back of my mind.

Growing up, my mom wore a solitaire round diamond on a beautiful unique chain everyday. In my mind, it’s a signature piece of hers I will always associate with her. (You know those blurry memories you have of your childhood where you can’t always remember the big details, but you still remember the small ones? I can always remember looking at that diamond while she held me when I was upset. It’s the feeling of comfort I hope my children feel when they remember the jingling of my bangles or everyday necklaces I wore when they’re grown and away from home.)

So, as an homage to my mom, I decided I wanted to make myself a solitaire diamond necklace - but with an MFM twist, of course. Instead of a round diamond, I found the most perfectly proportioned antique cushion cut. And instead of just a traditional bezel, I wanted to make it a half bezel with an H on the back, to represent my H.

Now here’s my favorite part of the story. I ordered the diamond from one of my favorite suppliers a week or so before he was due. I knew it would arrive while I was out and that I likely wouldn’t have time to make the setting until later down the road, but I wanted to snatch it up while I could and was still sleeping properly. The diamond was coming from our Canadian supplier to it would have to go through customs to get to our Atlanta studio.

And here’s the best part - literally hours after I’d given birth, I got a message from our supplier saying “I know this is not an ideal time, but your diamond is stuck at customs. please call me.” Everything went fine, Ranna handled it (praise be for Ranna!!), but I knew right then and there that this diamond was meant for my H and no one else. He’s been the easiest baby, but I guess that was his little bit of drama, ha. Now, it’s his favorite piece of jewelry to grab onto with his teeny little hands, and it’s my favorite thing knowing he’s making a memory that will last with him as he grows. Because isn’t that what it’s all about?
